  • Pay Range: $20.00 - $22.00 USD hourly

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Color Assistant will be responsible for filling a variety of supporting roles to the colorist and providing support to produce color grading operations from ingest to delivery. Primarily they will learn new processes and maintain proficiency with evolving technical applications and trends with the company workflow. In this position they actively provide support and solutions for the colorist team.

MAIN DUTIES:
The Color Assistant organizes incoming/outgoing film content: labeling, accordingly, adding leaders, cleaning, and archiving the new and existing film elements, analyzes originals to evaluate color density, gradation highlights, middle tones, and shadows, using densitometer and knowledge of light and color for 60% of the day, and help support colorist color and display systems that enable colorists to perform efficiently and productively during sessions.
They are responsible for maintaining outstanding levels of oversight of deliverables manufactured within the commercial/short form process, driving client supervised sessions: screenings, visual effects reviews and color-correction sessions as directed by colorist and/or production management, and ensures all required color elements are accounted for such as drop-ins, mattes, and conform references. They will also be responsible for the following:
  • Color-trace project updates to all appropriate versions.
  • Set up color suites prior to session start per session requirements. Calibration of projectors required.
  • Keep in communication with the project producer and production coordinator on any outstanding footage needed to complete the project.
  • Ensure all work orders are legibly filled out with set-up, color, and render/laydown time.
  • Ensure all work orders are actualized daily.
  • Communicate with the project producer on any additional requests made by the clients in the suites.
  • Render project per project specs and as instructed by Imaging Science and or Production
  • Label elements as requested per project specs.
  • Label finished elements clearly to indicate episode, cut number/letter, date, etc.
  • Quality check all rendered material for any missing material or corruption.
  • Update the project Producer on any cut-offs or delays in delivery.
  • Possible contribution to various post-production duties: film dailies, conforming, transcoding, exporting, Blu-ray creation, LTO archiving, etc.
  • Works with many different media and file types including, but not limited to: VTR formats, frame-based sequences (video), stream/container-based video (compressed and uncompressed), audio files (compressed and uncompressed), and metadata.
  • Help support new processes and maintain proficiency with evolving technical applications and trends with the company workflow.
  • Communicate with the project Producer and the Production Coordinators about any issues or changes that may arise with elements.
  • Flag and contact project Producer and Colorist on any shots that do not line up to the reference.
  • Ensure that artists add their session time to the work order.
  • Prep and add any FX drop-in shots for the session.
  • Ensure hero stills are updated and grabbed for all timelines.
  • Update the project Producer with any spec and or delivery changes.
  • Maintain updated information on the central project repository for project specs and changes.
  • Run internal or client facing sessions as indicated by operations.

WHAT YOU BRING:
The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in the operations of monitors (often 4K) that are designed for film color grading and color accuracy. They will be experienced with secure digital delivery systems, and must know how to operate HDSR video machines and video routers and be knowledgeable of the various flavors of color spaces, LUT applications and skills for color tracing, match grading and rendering. Additional desired skills include:
  • Collaborate and communicate with fellow colleagues to obtain job instructions and solutions in order to meet project deadlines.
  • Detailed oriented with application and equipment settings. Ability to troubleshoot.
  • Background and/or knowledge of offline editing.
  • Linux experience with ability to navigate via command line.
  • Is a clear and organized communicator who can manage a client’s expectations, and juggle multiple urgencies.
  • A general understanding of the digital intermediate process is all preferred.
  • Has a strong ability to work unsupervised, at a fast pace in a calm and collected manner with a result-oriented mindset and strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with DaVinci Resolve, BaseLight, Avid Media Composer, Flame, Autodesk Lustre, Adobe Premiere, and Daylight is a plus
  • Experience with Microsoft Office: Outlook, Excel and Word, is a plus.
  • Prior experience with media/post industry, preferably hand on operator experience is a plus.
  • Flexibility with start and end times, with occasional weekend requirements.
