Job Title: Assignment Editor - WFTV Orlando
Position Overview
WFTV Orlando is looking for an Assignment Editor to join our team! The ideal candidate is someone who can work well with newsroom staff and has technical knowledge of newsgathering resources. This person must have strong editorial judgment, strong organizational skills, and be digitally savvy. Our assignment editors are responsible for helping coordinate the newsroom response to important news, writing articles for the website, sending push alerts, and sharing information on social media. You must be able to work under pressure, meet strict deadlines and be aggressive about breaking news. You work well with newsroom staff and has technical knowledge of newsgathering resources. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- See the big picture and understand the significance of editorial content
- Responsible for logistics and content creation, working directly with reporters, photographers, producers, managers, and the Content Center to cover the news of the day
- Able to work with Newsone/ABC affiliates, CMG stations, Florida partners, and other media organizations across the country, including Cox Radio
- Planning and executing weekday and weekend news coverage on all platforms
- Managing logistics and resources
- Newsgathering (including developing story ideas, confirming information, and breaking news coverage)
- Creating and publishing content to digital and social media platforms
- Monitoring scanners and social media
- Communicating with broadcast and digital producers, field crews
- The schedule may include nights, weekends, holidays, and overnights
- Routine interruptions and unforeseen assignments are to be expected
- Expected to work under deadline constraints and meet precise deadlines (including self-imposed deadlines)
Minimum Qualifications
- At least 2-year of full-time newsroom experience
- BA or equivalent professional experience
- The ideal candidate is someone who can work well with newsroom staff and have technical knowledge of newsgathering resources
- Strong understanding of AP-style writing
- Strong knowledge of social media platforms
- Ability to multi-task, strong organizational and communication skills
- Physical demands and essential physical abilities include: a combination of physical work (standing, walking, lifting and carrying items such as laptop computers, pulling file drawers)
- Knowledge of the local market is a plus
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachler of Arts, Bachler of Science or equivalent professional experience, newsroom experience preferred
