We are seeking a talented and detail-oriented Associate Editor to join our editorial team at Simon & Schuster assisting the publisher and acquiring/editing select titles.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Scheduling: Maintain and manage publisher’s calendar and daily schedule.
  • Manage Expense Reports: File expense reports in a timely fashion.
  • Compile Materials: Gather comparative titles, P&Ls and other materials involved in acquisition process.
  • Project Management: Oversee the production schedule of publisher’s titles, ensuring deadlines are met and coordinating with other departments such as design, production, marketing, and sales.
  • Editorial Duties: Assist publisher in editorial process from acquisition to final book, including structural editing, line editing, copyediting, and proofreading.
  • Write Copy: Compose book descriptions for covers and online retail pages.
  • Author and Agent Relations: Serve as a point of contact for authors and agents, answering questions and offering guidance throughout the publishing process.
  • Market Research: Conduct market research to identify emerging trends and potential acquisition opportunities.
  • Occasional Acquisitions: Opportunity to acquire/edit titles and build a list.
Qualifications:
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Creative Writing, Communications, or a related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience in book or magazine publishing, with a focus on editorial work.
  • Experience with both fiction and non-fiction is a plus—specifically literary memoir with a pop culture bent.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience brainstorming book ideas and titles.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and editorial software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, InDesign).
  • Please note the person hired into this role will be expected to be in the office 4 days a week.

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York City, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
