We are currently seeking a Senior Editor to join the Bantam Books imprint. Bantam Books, among many other things in its storied history, is known for publishing quality mystery, suspense, and thrillers. Bantam has launched the careers of many bestselling mystery/thriller writers today, and today we are revitalizing that area within the Bantam Books imprint through bestsellers like Ashley Flowers’ ALL GOOD PEOPLE HERE, as well as new, exciting, and underrepresented voices in this extremely popular genre. Our Bantam team is expanding to bring even more authors and voices to this growing list.


This is a hybrid position in our New York City office, which will include approximately two in-office days a week.


Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Acquires manuscripts — mainly fiction — in the suspense, mystery, crime, and cross-over book club fiction market.
  • Edits manuscripts—writing editorial letters and line-editing manuscripts. Works with authors on concepts, outlines, and revisions.
  • Cultivates relationships in the agent community, particularly in these categories. Develops relationships with new agents and maintains ongoing ones.
  • Stays current on potential acquisitions of self-published authors with breakout potential
  • Positions works for target readerships, then works with cover department, publicity, and marketing on developing publishing plans to reach the widest possible audience
  • Works with production and managing editorial departments on copyediting, schedule, and design
  • Prepares sales materials as needed, including endorsement requests, flap copy, and title information sheets, along with reading guide questions and value-add materials
  • Keeps abreast of category trends and competitive titles
  • Handles daily correspondence, office work, phones, and attends required meetings
  • Handles special projects, backlist titles and house authors as assigned, and works collaboratively with the larger team


Requirements:

  • Minimum of 4 years book editorial experience and a solid track record of shaping commercially successful books
  • Strong editorial skills
  • Communication skills, verbal and written
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Organizational skills; ability to attend to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Deep category knowledge
  • Negotiation skills


Salary for this position is $78,000 - $82,000. All positions are currently eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
