KREM 2, the TEGNA station in Spokane, WA, is looking for an Assignment Editor to join our award-winning team in the beautiful Inland Northwest.

The Assignment Editor is the heart of the newsroom and will collaborate with the leadership team on daily news-gathering efforts. The ideal candidate loves winning breaking news, building relationships with contacts in the community, planning and logistics. This is a full-time, hourly position that reports to the Assistant News Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Exercise strong news judgment that represents KREM 2's "More to Every Story" brand
  • Maintaining daily assignment lists for field crews
  • Maintaining planning calendar with community events, press conference, court cases, etc.
  • Maintaining and developing content team's contact/sources list
  • Clearly communicate needs, updates, logistics, etc. to content team
  • Being point person for content team during breaking news
  • Monitor scanners, social media, etc. for breaking news
  • Know where crews and equipment are so resources can be quickly moved around when there is breaking news
  • Identify for leadership team newsworthy events/items ahead of time so resources can be assigned to those stories ahead of time
  • Vet story ideas to determine if they are newsworthy, then set-up stories worth pursuing
  • Coordinate with team members in news and production on live shots
  • Coordinate with other TEGNA stations on content sharing
  • Oversee weekend planning process
  • Represent KREM 2 professionally as an outward facing member of the content team to PIOs, newsmakers, etc.
  • Write stories for digital and broadcast platforms
  • Perform other tasks as required by leadership team
  • Ability to be flexible with schedule based on the needs of the content team

Requirements:

  • BA/BS in journalism, communication or related field preferred
  • At least 2 years of professional experience preferred
  • Understanding the tenants of professional journalism
  • Has knowledge and experience in journalism
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work well under constant deadlines and requests
  • Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news and maintain a strong professional demeanor with both internal employees and external contacts
  • Knowledge of ENPS, Edius and Axis graphics is a plus
  • Knowledge of the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene market is a plus
