About the Role & Team
Disney Television Animation is looking for an Assistant Art Director to join an unannounced Disney Juniors Series! This is a key leadership role that partners with the Executive Producers, Art Director, Producer, and subcontracted animation studio to execute the creative vision of the show while working within the schedule and budget for the series. The Assistant Art Director will work directly with the Art Director and art team to ensure quality and consistency of style throughout the series. They must be comfortable dealing with internal and external departments on a daily basis. They will have strong management skills to oversee and give feedback to artistic crew. They will be responsible for anticipating and problem-solving complexity issues. This role requires collaboration with and leadership of a diverse group of people in a fast-paced environment.

What You Will Do

  • Work closely with the Executive Producer, Art Director, and Director(s) on all aspects of the series’ look and mood.
  • Assist the EP and Art Director to continue the visual style of the series, creating conceptual and production artwork. This includes the Art Review, Black and White Line Art Review and Color Art Review for Executive approval.
  • Work closely with Art Director in overseeing the design team; delegating work and supervising schedules to create and maintain consistency with the design of the project.
  • Read Outlines/Scripts, attend Storyboard pitches and Animatic reviews, and flag potential complexity or design count issues.
  • Maintain production schedule provided by Producer to ensure cost effective, timely production.
  • Work alongside the Art Director in communicating and problem-solving with our vendor animation studio.
  • Participate in episodic handouts for Location, Props and Background Keys.
  • Participate in artwork breakdowns, with knowledge of series asset assumptions.
  • Provide guidance on calling retakes involving Layout, Playblast and Take 1 returns.
  • Collaborate with Color Stylists on creating and ensuring Lead Sheets are accurate.

If applicable, an Assistant Art Director may also be required to:

  • Create color scripts outlining the tone.
  • Review proxy, geometry, texture, and surface materials for final approval.
  • Approve pre-production materials from vendor studio.
  • Provide Background Paint or Location Design assistance as needed.
  • Additional duties as necessary, or as defined by individual contracts.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in artistic animation production.
  • Knowledge of drawing software that includes Photoshop, Illustrator, Harmony and 3D technology.
  • A broad knowledge of artistic styles, color theory, latest animation technology, and film.
  • Strong leadership qualities with the ability to partner with Creatives and Executives, collaborate with peers, and manage and mentor artists.
  • Ability to oversee multiple projects and proactively solve problems in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Ability to align with style and sensibility of show.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to travel outside of the country.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading a team of artists and designers.
  • Experience working with vendor animation studios.
  • Experience working on a CG series for a preschool audience.

Education
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent combination of training and/or experience.


The pay rate for this role in California is $53.16 to $62.02 per hour, which follows the pay scale agreed upon in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The base pay actually offered may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors.
