We are seeking a Senior Editor to join our team. This role is an excellent opportunity for someone who, simply put, loves life’s beautiful things: food and cooking, design and decorating, style and beauty. The ideal candidate has a track record in one, some, or all of these categories of publishing, with a proven expertise in navigating the four-color illustrated process. The Senior Editor will have an eye for identifying both existing and upcoming trends and superstars, and they will understand what makes a book commercially viable, visually appealing, and impactful in these categories. The Senior Editor will report to the Editorial Director and will be expected to acquire and edit 10 to 12 books per year; while culinary and lifestyle is the primary focus in this role, they are invited to acquire across all of Union Square’s categories. Above all, they will be excited to work with both authors and an energized team to make beautiful, smart, cool books that entertain, inspire, and educate.

This is a hybrid role requiring 2 to 3 days per week in our NYC headquarters.

An employee in this position can expect an annual starting rate between $80,000 and $90,000, depending on experience, seniority, geographic locations, and other factors permitted by law.

WhatYouDo:
  • Identifying trends, talent, and great stories
  • Cultivating relationships with agents, authors, and other creatives, as well as negotiating with and recruiting them
  • Evaluating book proposals, as well concepting original projects, and conducting research to build cases for their acquisition
  • Partnering with authors to refine their message and realize their vision throughout the bookmaking processes
  • Collaborating across all in-house departments (design, production, publicity, marketing, sales, etc.) to manage each book’s schedule and budget
  • Drafting catalog, jacket, and web copy as well as title information sheets
  • Preparing and trafficking essential paperwork, such as P&Ls and contract requests
  • Representing authors, books, and the publisher at sales meetings and industry conferences
Knowledge&Experience:
  • 4-year college degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 7 years’ publishing/editorial experience
  • Tech savviness and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience working on complex, full-color publications (either in books or other content-driven media spaces), including coordinating a multi-person team
  • Ability to identify consumer trends through analysis of data and research, but also with an ear to the ground
  • An understanding of the acquisition process, as well as a strong list of acquisitions or assignments
  • Strong project management skills, including careful attention to detail and timely follow-up, both internally and externally
  • Superb organizational skills, as well as an ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Creative problem-solving and decision-making
  • Thoughtful care and awareness in interpersonal communications, both internally and externally
