How You’ll Make an Impact

KCRW is seeking a Per Diem News Producer. This producer works with a team to help direct local news coverage during NPR’s signature shows Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

You’ll support a talented on-air host and board operator, working alongside other KCRW producers and editors. You’ll use your own news judgment and creativity to make KCRW’s local news coverage dynamic, crisp, clear and full of useful information.

This is an excellent opportunity for you if you have some experience in breaking news, audio editing and on-air reporting, but want to take your newsroom skills to the next level.

This is a non-exempt position reporting to the Managing Producer of News Operations.This position is in the SAG-AFTRA Bargaining Unit.

  • Pitching stories
  • Booking guests
  • Writing newscasts
  • Covering breaking news
  • Editing audio
  • Background research
  • Interview preparation
  • Voicing stories for air
  • Digital news production
  • Directing interns
  • Close coordination with other news producers

What You’ll Need

  • Knowledgeable about general news and Southern California
  • Digital media savvy
  • Able to edit audio (knowledge of Dalet, Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, Audacity or equivalent preferred)
  • Minimum 3 years related work experience required
  • Data collection and analysis of information from different sources
  • Critical thinking
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Ability to efficiently prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Journalism or related field preferred

This job is represented by SAG-AFTRA, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which ensures that performers receive fair wages, working conditions, and benefits. Membership provides valuable support and resources for those in the industry.

  • KCRW employees covered by the 2022-2026 SAG-AFTRA/KCRW contract need to follow the union security article of the contract, become a full voting member or fee-paying non-member
  • There are annual base dues plus working dues of 1.575% of the previous calendar year's earnings
  • The broadcast initiation fee specific to KCRW is $720 for full time and $360 for part time and there are payment plans
  • Upon hire, SAG-AFTRA will be in contact with all necessary information
  • Candidates can discuss any union specific questions with a shop steward upon hire
