WSKG Public Media is seeking a Director of Marketing & Community Engagement to lead our branding, communications and public relations efforts. The ideal candidate is a dynamic, energetic individual with a passion for Public Media and engaging the community with our brand. This position plays a critical role in the organization and serves on the Senior Leadership team.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Director of Marketing & Community Engagement develops and implements a multi-channel, annual communications, media and public relations plan for WSKG that is consistent with our mission and brand identity. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, this position shares WSKG’s story and ensures consistent key messaging, partnering with staff and vendors for effective project management. This role is also responsible for building and strengthening relationships with current and potential listeners, viewers and supporters by educating the public about the programs and activities at WSKG and their impact. This position will create an annual community engagement calendar of events that coordinates activities across the organization for an effective and seamless experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership (10%)

  • Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the organization to ensure alignment with the strategic goals of WSKG.
  • Identify opportunities to break down silos and ensure transparent and effective communication and partnership across departments.
  • Positively contribute to the organizational culture by promoting and modeling the organizational values.
  • Oversee partnerships with vendors, volunteers and interns; establish relationships based on trust and mutual accountability. Meet with partners to track progress to goals and ensure adequate tools, systems, and training are available to allow plans to be executed effectively and goals to be met.

Brand Management (10%)

  • Manage key messages and visual appearance of messaging across platforms to ensure consistency with WSKG’s core brand identity.
  • Ensure that all messaging is consistent with WSKG’s overall communications objectives and accurately reflects the organization's values.
  • Oversee the creation of messaging that educates the public about WSKG.
  • Share guidelines for the production, brand identity, and core message platforms with staff and vendors.

Communications Strategy, Planning & Budgeting (40%)

  • Work across the organization and with outside vendors and consultants as required to create and implement a comprehensive annual strategic communications and media plan that includes community engagement, fundraising, donor stewardship and internal communication, along with advertising schedules, media alerts, press releases and press conferences, as needed.
  • Create communications strategy and rollout plan.
  • Oversee implementation of a robust digital communications and engagement program.
  • Oversee all storytelling and public education initiatives in partnership with other internal stakeholders.
  • Write and manage executive-level internal and external communications plans and communications.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of communication methodologies and iterates through regular reporting and continuous improvement practices.
  • Create content and manage project development as required, including editing, writing, and seeking locations for placement.
  • Ensure appropriate and strategic goals for communications are in place for each program area and initiative.
  • Create and manage budgets for paid advertising, vendors, printing, etc.
  • Build tools and systems for internal communication that foster a transparent, inclusive, participatory, and celebratory work culture.

Audience & Community Engagement (40%)

  • Identify opportunities to engage our audience, members/donors, and the general public with locally and nationally produced content through public screenings, panel discussions, concerts, live interviews, and other activities and events across the region.
  • Periodically compiles community demographic & psychographic data along with audience analytics and uses this data to inform communications, branding, engagement, and audience development strategies. Develops tools and/or methodologies to regularly solicit audience and community feedback on locally produced content. Works with consultants as needed.
  • Provide leadership and support to the Community Advisory Board (CAB). Proactively leverages the CAB to identify community needs and solicit feedback on content, messaging, and engagement strategies.
  • Manages all aspects of WSKG’s community engagement activities including station sponsored events as well as community sponsored events that are aligned with our mission such as local arts festivals, concerts, performances, etc.
  • Oversee creation and production of WSKG engagement & outreach materials that can be used at events and across various media. Direct all print and digital production aspects, including project quotes, vendor management, and contract negotiations, as needed.
  • Oversee management of public speaking engagements and media interviews with staff as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, minimum of five (5) years in communications and marketing required. Experience working in a nonprofit fundraising environment is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Experience in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) is a plus.
  • Copywriting and editing experience are essential; excellent communication skills (oral and written).
  • Must be detail-oriented, highly motivated, able to prioritize and handle a high volume of work in short time frames and demonstrate an ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and deadlines as well as changing priorities. Must be able to work proactively, with excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to relate effectively to staff, volunteers, donors, partners, clients and the general public. Ability to work and interact well with individuals from various socioeconomic backgrounds in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Ability to take initiative, work well independently and collaborate as part of a team, building positive working relationships.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, exercise good judgment and decision-making, apply strong critical thinking and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent project- and people-management skills.
  • Experience in website and social media management.
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work independently while supervising staff and vendors.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of marketing and communication principles.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data, use graphs and charts, calculate percentages and proportions and use spreadsheet formulas.
  • Willingness to travel across the state to participate in events and gather content, as needed.
  • Demonstrate ethical business practices in conformance with all state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Willingness to foster agency, department and program-wide cooperation and teamwork through the use of positive/constructive communication techniques.
