THE ROLE:

The Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) is a creative and highly organized individual who understands how to discover and create video stories with wide appeal that reach goals. The MMJ is involved in all aspects of the creative process from story discovery to final delivery. The MMJ is highly aware of current events and trending topics with the ability to create video content that breaks through the noise. They have excellent creative development skills and are responsible for strategically driving visual and written aspects of a creative project through the MediaSource system. The MMJ is a strategic thinker who can plan and execute project assignments from concept to completion. The MMJ has a background in producing, writing, shooting and editing video and understands how to create news-style content that is aligned with goals. They also have the organizational ability to navigate a diverse creative team. They are expected to be able to take full production, creative, logistical and fiscal responsibility for any project - including working directly with clients.

WHAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  • Develop, write and produce multimedia news content that has wide national appeal and strategic messaging to reach goals.
  • Interpret technical and academic materials, identify valuable information and convey it in a way that resonates with the target audience.
  • Write health-focused content including press releases, TV news-style scripts, web content, photo captions, headlines and social media posts.
  • Operate primarily paired with another staff member to interview subject matter experts and/or shoot news-style, sequenced footage. This may occasionally be as a “one-man band” reporter/videographer.
  • Support creative story development to determine people, visuals and information to best tell each story.
  • Contribute to the creative development and execution of projects from conception to completion based on goals and expectations.
  • Demonstrate independence in a variety of production roles including producer, news videographer, writer and video editor.
  • Identify any issues within the creative process and proactively work to develop/present solutions.
  • Embody a creative futurist by monitoring and analyzing content trends changes in the news industry and recommending new ways to tell creative stories.
  • Edit news-focused multimedia content on a non-linear system.
  • Lead other aspects of moving projects forward, including preparation for and leading internal brainstorms and/or client meetings and working with other producers/ directors to create stories with purpose.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3 years of broadcast journalism experience at a news media outlet, production company and/or agency environment that is project-driven.
  • Proven ability to conceptualize, write and visually tell news stories.
  • Excellent grammar and execution of writing using the AP Style Guide.
  • Passion for understanding current events and industry trends.
  • Excellent time management skills and can turn around written and video content quickly without sacrificing quality of work.
  • Bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism, communications, video or film production, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience with non-linear editing software.
  • Experience using, operating and troubleshooting a wide range of video production equipment is required with Canon and Sony products preferred.
  • Experience with MAC computers and software preferred.

Location: MediaSource is located in Columbus, Ohio. This is a hybrid role based in the Central Ohio area that includes both remote working, on location production and workplace-based in-person collaboration which takes place at a minimum of once per week.

FLSA Status: Full-time, exempt employee

Travel: 20% travel will be required for conducting shoots or meetings outside of Central Ohio.
