AFI is the leading institution dedicated to nurturing the next generation of filmmakers. Our graduate program is renowned for its commitment to artistic excellence and innovation. Each year, our second-year Fellows produce Thesis films, which are celebrated at film festivals and often find their way to distribution platforms, showcasing the outstanding talent of our Fellows.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Clearance Consultant to join our team. As a Clearance Consultant, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that the Fellows’ Thesis films comply with all legal requirements and clearances necessary for festival submissions and potential distribution. Your expertise will be essential in supporting the Fellows securing the necessary rights, releases, and permissions of their creative works.

Key Responsibilities:

• Give one general clearance lecture to the entire class, in person, that will outline the AFI clearance standards, procedures, and policies.
• Be the primary liaison who responds to all rights related questions/concerns posed by the Fellows in relation to their Thesis films.
• Conduct one clearance meeting with each individual Thesis team (about 25 per year) to provide guidance on securing necessary releases and permissions from individuals and entities.
• Review and revise AFI clearance documents and procedures as required with the Production staff. Work closely and communicate regularly with the Manger of Post-Production & Delivery.
• Advise on any potential legal or clearance-related issues that may arise during production.
• Provide potential resources/vendors to the Fellows based on their individual needs.

Qualifications:

Degree in Film, Entertainment law or equivalent required.
Proven experience working in film clearance, legal affairs, or a related field, at a studio level, with a strong porfolio of successful clearance projects.
Extensive knowledge of the legal and clearance requirements of the film industry including fair use, copyright/trademark, and AI.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with filmmakers and staff.
