Chicago State University (CSU), is the oldest public university in the Chicago metropolitan area. Chicago State University is Illinois’ only four-year U.S. Department of Education-designated Predominantly Black Institution (PBI). The Communications, Media Arts, and Theatre Department seeks candidates for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Media Production. Teaching responsibilities include introductory and intermediate production courses in film, television, social media content creation, editing, directing, lighting, cinematography, and African American Cinema, as well as general courses in Media and Communication. Candidates should have a strong professional background as film or television content creators.
Faculty in Media Arts are expected to contribute to the curricular and co-curricular development of the program and the university, including supporting student productions. Tenure-track faculty are also required to maintain a portfolio of creative or scholarly work, as specified in the Departmental Application of Criteria. In addition, faculty are expected to hold regular office hours, serve as academic advisors, participate in university, college, and departmental service, and support initiatives to enhance student enrollment, retention, and graduation rates.
All faculty positions are governed by the tenets of a collective bargaining agreement. Faculty are hired, evaluated, retained, promoted, and tenured based on the terms outlined in the union contract. Primary responsibilities include teaching and related activities assigned during the nine-month academic year. Faculty members are expected to engage in teaching, research/creative activity, and service.
Required Education
All applicants must have an MFA or doctorate in Film or Television at the time of application.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience mentoring undergraduate students, teaching undergraduates, and/or working with students from diverse backgrounds is preferred. A deep knowledge of scriptwriting, film and lighting equipment, production techniques, editing software, and media distribution is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous academic experience at a four-year college or university is preferred. Experience in developing partnerships between media organizations and higher education institutions is also preferred.
