Berklee NYC operates Power Station, the largest professional recording studio in New York City, servicing clients in the music, film, theater, and television industries. The multi-room facility offers audio and video recording at the highest professional levels. Berklee NYC is also home to Berklee’s educational programs in New York City, including a Master of Arts in Creative and Media Technology.

The Power Station at Berklee NYC houses facilities for both the commercial studios and academic programs. Containing 5 recording studios as well as a black box theater and spaces such as a video control room, classrooms, and labs, Berklee NYC offers services for recording, education, events, and performances. The facility offers round-the-clock service to both professional clients as well as full-time students operating as a truly hybrid commercial and educational facility.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Technical Director, the Senior Studio Operations Technician serves as a direct Pro Tools operator, engineer or technician for commercial studio sessions. Senior Studio Operations Technicians work directly with staff Studio Operations Leads, Studio Operations Associates, and Chief Technician, as well as outside audio engineers, producers, and artists to execute professional recording sessions at the highest level.

Tasks will include setting up complex and large recording sessions, academic, and concert/multimedia events, and running Pro Tools and other software as required. Must demonstrate an advanced knowledge of both analog and digital audio signal flow and routing and be comfortable with using and maintaining large format analog recording consoles, vintage and modern microphones, basic video equipment, and digital headphone systems.

This individual must also have an extremely keen sense of troubleshooting in stressful and high-pressure situations and must be able to remain calm and focused under any circumstance. This individual needs to have astute attention to detail and be willing to work flexible hours to adapt and accommodate their schedule to the schedule of sessions and academic events throughout the year.

The work of a Senior Studio Operations Technician may either be dedicated to a specific session or event or to providing technical services and support as-needed across multiple sessions on a given day. Senior Studio Operations Technicians may also work to complete additional tasks to support and maintain the studio facilities such as audio/video wiring, equipment maintenance, organization and repairs, and general facility maintenance and prep related to the technical needs of commercial sessions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supporting setup and breakdown of large-scale and complex recording sessions
  • Engineering commercial sessions
  • Directly assisting outside engineers, producers, and artists
  • Operating Pro Tools and other software for clients
  • Communicating with external engineers and clients to understand their technical preferences, make recommendations, and support execution of their sessions
  • Providing direct troubleshooting support and other technical services to active commercial sessions
  • Technical maintenance and repairs of analog and digital recording equipment

Experience and Competencies:
  • A learning and growth mindset to advance in competency with experience at Power Station at Berklee NYC, taking on more complex projects with time.
  • Degree in Audio Engineering or commensurate experience required
  • 5-7 years experience in a professional recording studio, at least 3 years as an assistant engineer, demonstrated work (credits) as an engineer and/or technician at a comparable facility
  • Advanced knowledge of analog and digital recording equipment including large format console, outboard gear, microphones, and tape machines.
  • Advanced knowledge of and proficiency with Pro Tools software, particularly in large format recording sessions.
  • Proficiency with configuring and managing Dante audio and video networking and integration with other A/V systems preferred
  • Willingness and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, and the ability to interact with clients in a professional and helpful manner.
  • Attention to detail in all areas of work

SALARY RANGE: $40 - $55/ hr
