The Weather Channel is launching a local weather service providing up to date weather forecasts to affiliate clients. This weather service will be based in The Weather Channel’s Atlanta headquarters and bring the unparalleled excellence and expertise of one of America’s most trusted news brands.


This service will feature experienced meteorologists and the award-winning technology that the Weather Channel is known for. In addition to providing weather forecasting across the United States, The Weather Channel local weather service will also provide special event coverage for severe events. This coverage will help viewers increase their safety and awareness of extreme weather events.

Position Summary


The Production Operations Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all studio gear is functional and ready to provide real-time weather information to markets across the United States from The Weather Channel Network studios in Atlanta, GA. In addition, this position will oversee the production and recording process, along with distribution of the programming. Candidates for this role must have a strong technical background and understanding of studio/production operations, and be able to trouble shoot and resolve technical issues.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Coordinate studio operations, ensuring set pieces are in place, all technical equipment is functioning, and all video and audio signals are properly routed.
  • Perform necessary testing of all equipment, systems and recording procedures. This includes file distribution from in-house media systems to the designated final destination.
  • Enable processes/procedure modifications as needed, including changes to studio locations, adjustments to video/audio signal processing and recording/distribution methods.
  • Monitor content distribution and verify receipt by the intended stations.
  • Route video/audio signals within the Production infrastructure and to remote locations.
  • Have a good working understanding of studio lighting, camera video controls and chroma-key controls.
  • Knowledge of and experience with studio operations and equipment like Tricaster, Vinten Robotics and RTS is a must.
  • Basic knowledge of non-linear video editing is required.
  • Adobe Premiere editing experience a plus
  • Possess a working knowledge of Live U functions including Live U Matrix
  • Advanced knowledge of file path workflows and basic skill set for web browsing is required.


Education, Experience, Certification Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience;
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a live television environment.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts and extended hours based on significant weather events, including weekends as needed.

  • Must have a strong desire to continually increase technical and operational proficiency.
  • Will be expected to create, modify and maintain production operation procedures.
  • Must be able to train other technicians to provide additional support and PTO coverage.
  • Must be able to work in a multitasking environment.
  • Must be a self-starter and be able to work independently.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Willing to work in a team environment, with local and remote members.
  • Will be required to wear a headset and listen to multiple audio sources during the on-air show.
  • Must have proficiency with Google software applications and other software used by the Production Operations team.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a fast paced, high pressure environment without sacrificing accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.


Physical Requirements


  • Will be required to work a rotating schedule with non-traditional hours including weekends and holidays
  • May be required to sit in a chair from 2 – 4 hours at a time.
  • Will be required to type on a keyboard for a period of 2 – 3 hours.
  • Will be required to look at a computer monitor and other monitors for a period of 2 – 3 hours. Some monitors could be as close as 2 ft and as far as 12 ft away.
  • May be required to lift lighting fixtures, move scenery or other equipment. The weight may range from 20-100 lbs.
