Job Title: Meteorologist - WSOC TV
Position Overview
CMG Charlotte WSOC TV Meteorologists lead the station mission on the air and in the newsroom that no content is more important every day than weather coverage. Meteorologists are strong, live performers who ensure the channel news is the hyper-local, clear and easy to understand weather source, accurately informing and protecting our viewers by tracking all conditions on all platforms. They understand and help newscasts meet the established research goals. We are looking for clear weather storytellers, who have a strong background in the science of meteorology and understand that seconds matter when it comes to keeping viewers safe during severe weather. The ideal candidate should be comfortable engaging with viewers on the air, on social media and in the community in ways that will further build loyalty to the station's brand.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead weather coverage in newscasts
- Maximize use of weather technology to track conditions in a hyper-local manner
- Attend editorial meetings, leading the meetings with the big weather information the newsroom needs to know and how it should be positioned/promoted for newscasts
- Coordinate and communicate with producers on all platforms
- Regularly showcase and execute process language within newscasts
- Communicate severe weather possibilities to newsroom managers and a proposed plan of coverage for the meteorologists to the News Director
- Embrace assignments away from daily forecasting, including special reports and being live in the field
- Write and tape a forecast for the web at least once a day
- Tape forecasts for radio, NESN and other partners, as warranted
- Having daily presence on social media promoting our weather brand
- Do special streaming cut ins on important weather information as warranted
Minimum Qualifications
- A minimum of 3 years professional experience as a broadcast meteorologist is required
- Must be able to handle breaking weather scenarios on-air on your own, and clearly communicate the risks to the public
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- AMS Seal required
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year College or university in Journalism, Communications or Science preferred
- Completion of Certified Broadcast Meteorology (CBM) program through the American Meteorology Society (AMS) is preferred
